An investigation is still underway into the three-alarm fire, which happened Christmas Day at a commercial building at 4600 El Camino Real, the Santa Clara County Fire Department and the city of Los Altos said in a joint statement Tuesday.

The building was declared unsafe and at risk of collapse, resulting in the closure of eastbound El Camino Real between San Antonio Road and Sherwood Avenue. The condition of the building has also blocked investigators from finishing their probe into the fire.

Officials said the city has approved the demolition of a portion of the building facing El Camino Real, which will allow the investigation to proceed and the roadway to reopen.

The work is scheduled to begin Wednesday and “will be completed systematically to preserve the integrity of the site as much as possible as the investigative process continues,” according to the statement.

A portion, if not all the closed section of El Camino Real, is expected to reopen as early as Thursday.
