No. 6 Archbishop Riordan 51, No. 4 Archbishop Mitty 48 (OT)
Trailing by two points in the waning seconds of overtime, Tyler Jones‘ 3-point attempt from the top of the arc missed the mark as Riordan held on to defeat host Mitty in a showdown between the West Catholic Athletic League’s top teams.
Zion Sensley’s two free throws for Riordan evened the score 42-42 with 18.1 seconds remaining in regulation. The San Francisco school then didn’t allow a shot attempt as it extended the game an extra four minutes.
OT was no different from the rest of this one — a defensive grind.
One day after suffering a double-digit loss to No. 1 Salesian at De La Salle’s MLK Classic, Riordan grabbed the lead early in the extra session, extended the margin to 46-42 on a basket by Sensley and then withstood Mitty’s last charge.
The home team pulled to within 46-45 on Jones’ 3-pointer with 25.4 seconds to go.
Mitty got a big break when Riordan, trying to protect a four-point lead, was called for a foul on Jones’ shot from beyond the arc with 7.8 seconds left.
Jones made the first two foul shots and missed the second.
Riordan couldn’t grab the rebound and the ball went out of bounds, giving Mitty a chance to win.
But the shot didn’t fall.
Sensley finished with 17 points to lead Riordan, which also got 10 points from John Tofi.
Nathan d’Abreu Noronha (17 points), Gavin Ripp (15 points) and Jones (nine points) were Mitty’s top scorers.
Riordan improved to 10-4 overall and 5-0 in the league. Mitty dropped to 10-5, 4-1.
No. 1 Salesian 89, De Anza 49
Salesian turned in another dominant performance, breezing past host De Anza to extend its winning streak to seven games while improving to 19-1 overall and 5-0 in the Tri-County Athletic League’s Rock Division.
Elias Obenyah and Carlton Perrilliat each scored 13 points for Salesian. Ahmari Otis (22 points) and Jacari Madison (14 points) led the way for De Anza, which dropped to 6-10, 2-3.
No. 2 De La Salle 66, Dougherty Valley 56
In a rematch of last season’s North Coast Section Open Division final, which Dougherty Valley won, De La Salle had to scrap and claw to win at home against the new-look Wildcats.
Dougherty Valley, which graduated four-fifths of its starting lineup, is making steady progress under longtime coach Mike Hansen. That was clear again Tuesday.
This East Bay Athletic League game wasn’t easy.
De La Salle held a nine-point advantage at halftime and an eight-point edge through three quarters.
Braddock Kjellesvig led the Spartans with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Leo Ricketts also had 15 points, 10 in the final period, and Alec Blair finished with 14 points. Arshawn Salkhi chipped in with 11 points.
Kenny Cloud scored 18 points, Jayden Doty had 14 points and Aadi Malali added 11 points to lead Dougherty Valley.
De La Salle is 17-3, 3-0. Dougherty Valley slipped to 11-8, 0-3.
No. 12 Serra 67, St. Francis 50
Serra breezed at home past St. Francis in WCAL play behind 24 points from Sebastian Margate, 20 from Andrew McDowell and 12 points from Mikey Ballout.
Serra improved to 11-4, 3-2. St. Francis is 3-11, 1-4.
No. 13 Sacred Heart Prep 57, Menlo School 42
TJ O’Brien had 22 points and Drew Wagner added 16 as Sacred Heart Prep beat rival and nextdoor neighbor Menlo in a West Bay Athletic League game.
SHP is 11-0, 2-0, Menlo is 8-8, 1-1.
Girls basketball
No. 1 Archbishop Mitty 88, No. 11 Archbishop Riordan 46
Mitty, playing on the road in San Francisco, scored 55 points in the first half on its way to another impressive triumph as the nation’s top-ranked team remained undefeated on the season.

UConn-bound Morgan Cheli scored 14 of her 19 points in the first quarter to lead the way. McKenna Woliczko added 17 points, Elana Weisman had 11 points and Belle Bramer contributed 10 points as the Monarchs improved to 15-0, 4-0.
Riordan dropped to 10-3, 2-2.
The game was the first between the teams as Riordan, formerly an all-boys school, is new to the WCAL in girls basketball.
