SAN JOSE — Authorities on Thursday announced an arrest in connection with the discovery of a “functional homemade destructive device” near an elected official’s home in San Jose a year and a half ago.

A “functional homemade destructive device” was found near an elected official’s home in San Jose on June 14, 2022, according to the San Jose Police Department. A suspect in the case was arrested on Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2024. (San Jose Police Department)

The bomb was found on June 14, 2022, near Delmas and Coe avenues in the city’s Atlanta Bird neighborhood, San Jose police Officer Steve Aponte said in a news release.

The San Jose Police Department Bomb Squad seized the device, which appeared to be cylindrical in shape and wrapped in duct tape. It was then rendered safe and booked into evidence.

Following a lengthy investigation, detectives identified a 33-year-old San Jose man as a suspect in the case and obtained a warrant for his arrest, according to Aponte.

On Tuesday, detectives located and arrested the man. They also served a search warrant at his home and found a “field guide for improvised explosives,” Aponte said.

Police did not release any other information about the case, such as the suspect’s motive.
