Stanford star Cameron Brink injured in Oregon game

PALO ALTO — Two-time All-American Cameron Brink left Stanford’s game in the first quarter with an apparent left leg injury and was ruled out for the remainder of Friday night’s contest.

With 3:45 left in the first quarter, Brink bumped knees with Oregon guard Sofia Bell, knocking her to the court behind the play. That allowed Oregon to score their first points of the game, ending a 20-0 Cardinal blitz.

A pair of teammates helped Brink off the court, and two more coaches guided her as she limped to the locker room. Before the first quarter ended, Brink returned to Stanford’s bench. During a stoppage, she stood behind the huddle, bending her legs to stretch.

Early in the third quarter, Stanford announced Brink would remain sidelined for the rest of the game.

Stanford’s best all-around player, Brink is averaging 17.4 points and 10.8 rebounds per game. The center is also the lynchpin of Stanford’s defense, notching 3.3 blocks per game.

Brink led Stanford to its 2021 national championship, Tara VanDerveer’s third as a head coach. A Stanford win Friday would make VanDerveer tied with Mike Krzyzewski for most college basketball wins of all time.

After the injury, Brink didn’t play for the rest of the first half. Stanford led 43-26 at halftime. When play resumed for the second half, Brink reappeared on the bench with an ice pack on her leg.
