Welcome to the Bay Area News Group (Mercury News & East Bay Times) boys Athlete of the Week poll.
For the entire academic year, we will provide a list of candidates who stood out over the previous week and allow you, the reader, to vote for the winner.
This week, we consider performances from Jan. 15-20.
Polls close at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
Vote as many times as you’d like until then without using bots or any other artificial methods of voting.
Votes by email and after 5 p.m. Wednesday are not counted.

On to the nominees:
Noel Cabrales, Newark Memorial soccer: The senior had his second hattrick of the season — three goals — to lead the Cougars to a 4-1 victory over James Logan in Mission Valley Athletic League play. Two days later, he had two goals in a 6-0 league victory over American, giving him 27 goals on the season.
Antonio Kellogg Jr., Ygnacio Valley basketball: The 6-foot-3 junior led the way with 21 points on 7-of-11 shooting as Ygnacio Valley routed Clayton Valley Charter 66-39 in a showdown for first place in the Diablo Athletic League. He also scored 23 points in a 78-48 non-league victory over El Cerrito and 19 in a 86-42 league triumph over Concord.
Braddock Kjellesvig, De La Salle basketball: The 6-6 junior had 16 points and eight rebounds as the Spartans held off host Dublin to remain unbeaten in East Bay Athletic League play while sending the Gaels to their first league defeat. He also had 15 points and 15 rebounds in a 66-56 league victory over Dougherty Valley.
Nolan Koch, Los Gatos basketball: The 6-5 senior averaged 20.7 points per game as Los Gatos defeated Milpitas, Gunn and Palo Alto to take command of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division race. He had 22 points in a 56-55 victory over Milpitas, 21 in a 66-49 win over Gunn and 19 in a 50-45 triumph over Palo Alto.
Lucas Nguyen, Santa Clara soccer: The senior had two goals and assisted on another as Santa Clara defeated Los Altos 5-1 in a SCVAL De Anza Division match. The Bruins improved to 9-5 overall and 3-3 in the league.
Gavin Cook Whisenton, Liberty basketball: With first place on the line in the Bay Valley Athletic League, the senior guard scored 23 points as the Lions roared back from a 15-point halftime deficit to defeat host Pittsburg 76-69. The victory improved Liberty’s record to 17-3 overall and 4-0 in the league.
Asher Meighen, Half Moon Bay basketball: The 6-2 junior finished with 25 points, 16 after halftime, as Half Moon Bay defeated Carlmont 58-51 in a showdown between Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division contenders. He also had five rebounds, four steals, two blocks and two assists and was 7 for 7 from the foul line.

Cody Merrill, Gilroy wrestling: The senior won the 288-pound division at the Gilroy Mid-Cals, defeating Declan Follette of Laguna Creek by fall in the final. Merrill’s victory helped powerhouse Gilroy capture the team championship as the Mustangs finished ahead of runner-up Tuttle of Oklahoma and third-place De La Salle.
Eric Schmidtke, Menlo School soccer: The senior had a goal and an assist in a 3-0 victory over Priory and a goal in a 6-0 win over Eastside Prep. The Knights began this week 7-1-2 overall and 5-0 in the West Bay Athletic League.
Zion Sensley, Archbishop Riordan basketball: The 6-8 Saint Mary’s-bound senior capped a sensational week by scoring 24 points to lead the Crusaders to a 69-58 victory over Southern California powerhouse Centennial-Corona at the Crush in the Valley showcase at Contra Costa College. He also had 17 points in a 51-48 overtime victory at Archbishop Mitty.
Wyatt Sparling, Branham basketball: The 6-4 senior led the Bruins with 20 points as they defeated Oak Grove 60-46 to improve to 16-1 overall and 5-0 in the Blossom Valley Athletic League’s Mt. Hamilton Division.
