Peter McLaughlin, 64, and Ronald Simmons, 34, were alone in their cells when they died on Oct. 20 and Oct. 21, respectively, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

The San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office probed the deaths and found that McLaughlin died of an undiagnosed cancerous brain tumor and Simmons died by suicide, the sheriff’s office said. Prosecutors concluded there were no other factors in either death.

The sheriff’s office said it understood in-custody deaths can raise questions and concerns.

“We want to assure the public that transparency and accountability are of the utmost importance to us,” the sheriff’s office said in the news release. “As such, we are sharing the findings with the community as soon as the investigations concluded.”

Sheriff Christina Corpus also extended her “sincere condolences to the family and friends” of the two inmates.

“The well-being and safety of those in our custody is our highest priority,” Corpus said.
