Prep roundup: Mitty survives Bellarmine’s upset bid, rallies late for WCAL basketball triumph

No. 6 Archbishop Mitty 45, Bellarmine 43

Mitty survived a scare on Thursday night as Bellarmine gave the visitors all they could handle until the final second rolled off the clock.

When the Bells were unable to score on their final possession, Mitty could finally exhale as it won this hard-fought West Catholic Athletic League game to stay on the heels of first-place Archbishop Riordan in the league standings.

Mitty, which trailed by five points with less than four minutes to go, closed the game on a 7-0 run to improve to 13-5 overall and 7-1 in the league.

The Bells fell to 7-11, 2-6.

Tyler Jones‘ 3-pointer from the corner pulled the Monarchs even 43-43. Aaron Biebel’s basket a short time later provided the winning margin.

Gavin Ripp and Nathan d’Abreu Noronha scored 12 points each to lead the Monarchs. Jones finished with 10.

Bellarmine got 10 points from Will Corbett and eight points apiece from Brennan Williams and Nick Paniccia.

Mitty led 28-26 at halftime. Bellarmine was in front 36-34 going to the final period.

No. 4 Archbishop Riordan 60, No. 9 St. Ignatius 47

Andrew Young scored 22 points to lead Riordan to a victory on the road over St. Ignatius as the Crusaders completed a season sweep of their San Francisco rival.

Riordan, which never trailed, held on down the stretch even after its Saint Mary’s-bound star Zion Sensley was ejected after receiving a second technical foul with about three minutes to go.

The Crusaders improved to 14-4, 8-0.

SI, which lost a heartbreaker in overtime at Serra on Tuesday, fell to 13-5, 4-4.

No. 8 Dublin 67, Amador Valley 57

On its Senior Night, Dublin turned back rival Amador Valley to get back on track after consecutive home losses to East Bay Athletic League contenders De La Salle and San Ramon Valley.

Dublin got 17 points and six rebounds from Cameron Anderson, 12 points, six rebounds and three steals from Jalen Stokes and 11 points and five rebounds from Isaiah Wong.

Ramir Raymore added 10 points and four rebounds and Evan Bautista had 10 points as the Gaels improved to 18-5, 4-2.

Amador Valley dropped to 15-8, 0-6.

Cade Krueger (23 points) and Kasen Krueger (15 points) led the Dons.

No. 14 Bishop O’Dowd 51, Piedmont 46

Bishop O’Dowd won on the road over Piedmont to remain undefeated and comfortably ahead in the West Alameda County Conference’s Foothill Division.

Samuel Chavarin had 11 points and four rebounds and Josh Green added 11 points, four steals and three rebounds as the Dragons upped their record to 15-6, 8-0.

Piedmont fell to 12-8, 4-3.

O’Dowd also got nine points, six rebounds and three assists from Leo Chapman and eight points and seven rebounds from Tobias Aisien.

No. 13 Sacred Heart Prep 87, Crystal Springs Uplands 31

TJ O’Brien and Matthew Norris each scored 16 points and Alex Straser added 13 points as the Gators breezed on the road in West Bay Athletic League play.

SHP is 14-4 5-0, Crystal Springs is 5-12, 1-4.

Palo Alto 39, Los Altos 31

In a game dominated by defense, Jorell Clark was the offensive hero as the Palo Alto standout finished with 21 points to lead Vikings to a victory at home in Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division play.

Palo Alto, which got great defense from Alaap Nair, allowed just two field goals in the second half.

The Vikings improved to 15-5, 6-2. Los Altos is 12-8, 4-4.

Moreau Catholic 80, Mission San Jose 37

Moreau improved to 14-7 overall and 9-0 in the Mission Valley Athletic League with a blowout victory on the road over Mission San Jose.

Cole Loud (12 points) and Jalen Arnold (11 points) led Moreau, which also got 10 points apiece from Kevin Chapman, Kareem Jackson Jr. and Andrew Placido.

MSJ fell to 9-9, 3-6.

Girls basketball

No. 10 Branham 52, Christopher 36

Branham bounced back from a narrow loss to Evergreen Valley on Tuesday, winning at home over Christopher behind 28 points from Quinn Godfrey and 11 from Rebecca Sung.

Mitty basketball star named to McDonald’s All-America game

Christopher closed to within single digits in the third quarter but couldn’t keep pace down the stretch as Branham improved to 16-2 overall and 5-1 in the Blossom Valley Athletic League’s Mt. Hamilton Division.

The Cougars dropped to 16-4, 2-4.

Christopher got 15 points from Kaycee Carrasco and 11 from Maddy Tamone.
