CHICO — “Today is the biggest line I’ve ever seen,” Robin Cushman said at the South Chico Community Assistance Center food distribution on Saturday.

Cushman, who is experiencing homelessness, said the program helps lots of people and that she only comes when she is unable to get food.

The South Chico Community Assistance Center, located at 1805 Park Ave., holds an open pantry every second and fourth Tuesday of the month from 2-4 p.m.

“There’s usually a line out front at least an hour-and-a-half before,” said John Howlett, co-founder of South Chico Community Assistance Center. “So the need is just absolutely there.”

The group served over 200 people Saturday, Howlett said, “which likely translates to 300 people in practical terms — a huge jump over the usual 120-130 persons. We need to figure out new ways to achieve food security in Chico, and we (at the center) are ready to help.”

Howlett said the center would like to open the pantry more often, but volunteers are limited by how much food they get each month. The food comes from the Northstate Food Bank, local donations and purchases made using the center’s budget.

Often, those who use the pantry are just trying to get through the end of the month, Howlett said. Volunteers also see a lot of families, homeless people and college students using their services.

South Chico Community Assistance Center is an entirely volunteer-run organization that distributes food, clothing and hygiene products to those in need. Volunteers also provide referrals for those looking for additional aid.

The organization also uses the building to provide a free meeting space for the community and to host other events, such as classes and bike repair clinics, as well as advocacy work, art and music.
