PALO ALTO – A swastika was found spray-painted on a sidewalk near Peers Park in Palo Alto over the weekend, prompting authorities to launch a hate-crime investigation.

A passerby reported the vandalism around 8:45 p.m. Sunday, the Palo Alto Police Department said in a news release. An officer located the swastika, which was painted with white spray paint and about 15 inches long.

A public works crew removed the swastika later the same evening, according to police.

Police said they do not know when the vandalism happened and do not have any suspects. No similar incidents have been reported recently in Palo Alto.
