No cause of death has yet been determined for Trammell Evans.

Evans was dropped off on April 30, 2023, at the Black Rock trailhead, near the park’s northwest corner. He had reportedly planned a five-day solo loop through the interior of the park. When he failed to meet his ride back at Black Rock on May 5, he was reported missing.

The remains were found around noon on Jan. 25 in the Black Rock area, park officials said. Park researchers had found an unattended backpack, later confirmed as belonging to Evans, and rangers who were called to the area discovered the remains.

The sheriff’s department said Evans was a Florida resident. His family’s social media postings said that he was from the Jacksonville area and had gone to Florida State University but moved to Los Angeles with a woman he had met on the Appalachian Trail in 2021. They said he was an experienced backpacker who had become familiar with the California desert.

The last post on their “Find Tram” Instagram account speculated that he died of “complications related to alcohol withdrawal.”
