Prep roundup: Salesian picks up key win, Bishop O’Dowd beats Piedmont and two Santa Clara players reach 1,000 career points

Girls basketball

No. 16 Salesian 62, No. 17 St. Patrick- St. Vincent 49

Janiya Sawyer’s 20-point, six-rebound performance kept Salesian perfect in Tri-County Athletic League Rock Division as the Pride defeated the second-place Bruins.

Oriannah Birden had a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Ayla Rege added 12 points.

Salesian dominated the whole way through, winning every quarter by at least a point.

St. Patrick-St. Vincent’s Arianna Aguilar led all scorers with 21 points.

The Pride are 11-2 in the new year and improved to 14-9, 8-0. Their final three-game stretch includes Swett, Pinewood and De Anza.

No. 7 Bishop O’Dowd 69, No. 6 Piedmont 50

Nyah Greenwood led Bishop O’Dowd with 18 points and Savannah Jones added 16 points as the Dragons took care of business at home against Piedmont.

Natalia Martinez scored a game-high 23 points for the Highlanders.

The Dragons jumped out to a 38-28 lead at halftime and didn’t look back. A stingy defensive performance in the fourth quarter by Bishop O’Dowd held Piedmont to just five points.

The Dragons’ fifth consecutive win moved them to tied for first place with the Highlanders in the West Alameda County- Foothill league standings at 5-1. The two teams split the season series with each winning a game over the other.

Bishop O’Dowd improved to 15-5, 4-1. Piedmont dropped to 16-5, 4-1.

Santa Clara 59, Mountain View 38

Santa Clara (14-5, 5-2 Santa Clara Valley- El Camino) had not one, but two players reach the 1,000-point club in the same game.

Senior Nina Llamas and junior Mia Talalele each reached the 1K mark as Llamas finished Wednesday’s game with 27 points while Talalele scored 12.

Santa Clara held a 10-point lead at halftime and didn’t allow Mountain View (16-5, 7-2) to score more than 10 points in a quarter.

Alana Hernandez led Mountain View with six points.

Each team has three more games to finish out the regular season.

Boys Basketball

Piedmont 58, Alameda 39

It was a tightly contested first half that saw the Hornets down 34-33 at halftime, but the Highlanders pulled away with a 19-4 third quarter to seal the win.

Ravi Silverberg scored a game-high 18 points and Brit Burden added 14 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks in Piedmont’s win. Jack Omarra and Zion Moore each had eight points for Alameda.

Moreau Catholic 85, Kennedy 64

The Mariners notched their 11th straight league win with a 21-point rout of Kennedy behind Cole Loud’s 18 points.

Kareem Jackson Jr. added 16 points and Jaylen Arnold chipped in 11 in the win.

Moreau improved to 16-10, 11-0 while Kennedy dropped to 12-11, 7-4.
