DANVILLE – Police are investigating an alleged altercation between a referee and a spectator at the end of a junior varsity boys basketball game last week in Danville, the Bay Area News Group has learned.
Video of the incident on Thursday posted on Hudl, a platform schools use to record game film, shows an official swinging at a spectator at Monte Vista High School.
Danville police, in an email to the Bay Area News Group on Monday afternoon, said it has “conducted an investigation and documented the incident between two non-student adults in a crime report. There were no arrests and one party desired prosecution.
“The case will be forwarded to the District Attorney for review at the completion of the investigation. There is no more information to release at this time.”
Monte Vista beat rival San Ramon Valley 61-59, according to MaxPreps.
It is not known if the spectator was associated with either school.
Ilana Israel Samuels, a spokesperson for the San Ramon Unified School District, said her office is working closely with Danville police as the law enforcement agency investigates the matter.
She added that the district also is in communication with the firm responsible for assigning referees to work games.
Tim Brendlin, president of the Contra Costa Basketball Officials Association, said on Monday that he could not address the incident specifically. But, he added in an email to the Bay Area News Group, “Safety for all of those in attendance of the events we officiate remains our top priority.”

North Coast Section commissioner Pat Cruickshank told the Bay Area News Group on Monday, “We have been in contact with the school and the Officials association, and they are handling appropriately. We have nothing further on the incident to share at this time.”
