CHICO — Longtime meteorologist Anthony Watts has made it easy for people to access the weather report in any region at any time with a brand new weather channel.

The channel, called KPAY Live Weather, is free to watch on YouTube and made its debut on the internet courtesy of KPAY 93.1 FM, said Deer Creek Broadcasting General Manager Dino Corbin, the parent company of the radio station. The weather station can be streamed to computers, laptops, cell phones and most smart televisions.

Corbin hired Watts as a meteorologist 30 years ago. Watts has worked for over 35 years weather forecasting for the north valley in different roles on television and in radio.

“He’s pretty amazing,” Corbin said.

The system provides real time weather information for current conditions in Chico and other cities. It shows real time live radar satellite imagery, local regional and national forecasts and climate information such as  high and lows, the rainfall, record temperatures and other conditions. The system also shows where severe weather is occurring. The live radar tracks storms in real-time, according to a press release.

The channel also shows live views of roadway webcams for Interstates 5 and 80 over the summits, Highways 32 and 36 via Chester and Highways 99 and 70 to the Sacramento airport, according to the release.

“This system is revolutionary for providing a real time way to look at weather without the need to go look up specific things on the internet or on their cell phone. This live stream makes it easy to see what’s going on at any time. You don’t need to wait for the six or 11 p.m. news anymore. You can tune in at any time with live and updated information,” Watts said.

Watts worked at Channel 12, now Action News Now, for many years. He has been developing the YouTube channel over the last few months and it was launched a few weeks ago.

“We can localize it to anywhere we want and make it relevant to the area, and people can look at it on golf courses or at sports bars to see what the weather prediction is,” Watts said.

Corbin said the system is very detailed.

“It’s very versatile,” Corbin said. “He worked really hard on the channel and it has now come to fruition. His creativity and design made it happen.”

Corbin said Watts has traveled all over the world speaking at forums and seminars.

“He overhauled the entire system; he was on talk shows and flown to different countries,” Corbin said.

The weather channel can also be accessed at hotels for people traveling to check.

Watts started the system a year ago and has been working on it and perfecting it over the last year.

“The weather dictates how you live your life,” he said.

Watts attended Purdue University in Lafayette, Indiana. He started out majoring in nuclear physics but ended up switching to meteorology and electrical engineering.

Watts also has a weather blog called wattsupwiththat.com which has been running since 2006.
