REDDING  —  An investigation is underway regarding the deaths of two children near Shasta Dam.

The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office and numerous local agencies around 9 a.m.  Thursday responded to a campground area north of Shasta Dam to reports of two children who had somehow fallen from the camping area to the river.

Law enforcement said responding crews located two children deceased.

Recovery efforts were ongoing as of 11 a.m. and included numerous agencies, including the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Teams and dive team.

SCSO said that at this time, nonessential vehicle traffic is not allowed to cross the dam.

At the request of the sheriff’s office, water flows from the dam have been reduced to aid in the effort.

According to SCSO, further updates will be released as they are available.
