LA PORTE — Throughout the week, crews have conducted prescribed burns and other wildfire barrier projects throughout the Plumas National Forest.

Crews made their way to the Feather River Ranger District near Challenge and Woodleaf on Thursday. Residents may have noticed some smoke over the course of the project.

According to an update provided by Plumas National Forest Public Information Officer Tamara Schmidt, about 51 acres were treated.

“A few hazard trees not related to fire or prescribed burning activities were discovered along La Porte Road and firefighters were able to mitigate them late this afternoon for public safety,” the update said. “This also resulted in some minor traffic delays until the road could be cleared.”

Schmidt noted that those driving in the area should keep an eye out for workers and firefighter traffic.

So far, the Forest Service has treated the Little Grass Valley Reservoir Recreation Area, Forbestown, Challenge, Woodleaf, Sunset Hill and more areas.

“Smoke is expected to be visible but not have significant long-term impacts to nearby communities, including Forbestown, Challenge, Brownsville and Dobbins,” a press release issued by the service reads.
