CHICO — Chico is set to begin vacating a group of homeless people living at Comanche Creek Greenway for the first time since July 2022, when more than 100 people left in the largest camp eviction in recent memory.

Notices are set to be delivered May 7 to 48 homeless people to three areas in Chico with an order to vacate public property, including Comanche Creek Greenway, lower Bidwell Park and Teichert Ponds, according to a notice Monday to Legal Services of Northern California

It is the 22nd enforcement by Chico, counted by this newspaper, following the limits of the Warren v. Chico settlement agreement. It requires a 17-day minimum noticing prior to enforcement, and consistent attempts to reach and offer appropriate shelter.

According to the notice, 12 people are counted for enforcement at Comanche Creek Greenway, with 10 previously assessed for shelter and eight unoccupied camps.

The city says it determined 13 people are camping at lower Bidwell Park, with 10 previously assessed for shelter and five unoccupied camps.

Twelve people were counted at Teichert Ponds, with eight previously assed for shelter and five unoccupied camps.

As of Monday, the Genesis Emergency Non-congregate Housing Site has 23 Pallet shelters available including three ADA units, and the Torres Community Shelter has 24 beds available: 21 in the men’s dorm, 3 in the women’s dorm and non in the gender-neutral dorm.
