CHICO — Pull out the bucket hats and tube tops because the 90s are returning this week — at least in terms of the temperature.

For the first time this year, the National Weather Service is potentially forecasting triple digits, according to Kate Forest of the Sacramento office.

“It’s definitely interesting seeing these temperatures this early in the year,” Forest said.

Forecasts are showing highs on Tuesday at about 96 degrees followed by 98 degrees on Wednesday for the Chico area.

“We’re looking at dry weather going forward,” Forest said. “We will start to see a cooling trend after Wednesday that will carry us through the weekend.”

Paradise, while still warm, is looking at highs in the mid-80s on Tuesday and as high as 89 degrees on Wednesday before the heat starts to mellow out. Similarly on Tuesday, Oroville is expected to hit 92 degrees and then 95 degrees on Wednesday.

In Red Bluff, Tuesday will be as high as 95 degrees followed by 98 degrees on Wednesday while Orland could go up to 99 degrees or above.

Forest also noted that higher elevations, such as the High Sierra, may have a chance of thunderstorms.

Although the weather is getting warmer, rivers and lakes are still experiencing considerable runoff from melting snow and will likely remain cold. Forest said the National Weather Service is emphasizing water safety as the rivers can be both cold and fast which can create hazardous conditions.

“Wear a life vest and never go to the water alone,” Forest said. “Stay hydrated and find some shade. Make sure your pets have a cool place to chill.”

As of 2 p.m. Monday, Lake Oroville was monitored at 898.57 feet. At the same time, Shasta Lake was measured at 1060.89 feet.
