Illegal marijuana grow leads to arrest of two, BCSO says

HONCUT — Two people were arrested following an investigation into an illegal marijuana grow in Honcut after a fire broke out near the grow, according to a press release from the Butte County Sheriff’s Office.

On May 29, BCSO deputies and Cal Fire-Butte County firefighters responded to calls about a fire near the intersection of Brown Boulevard and Palermo Honcut Highway. The fire burned approximately five acres before firefighters extinguished it.

According to the press release, fire investigators found evidence that the fire started from a burn pile that was located at an illegal marijuana grow.

Koy Chao, 57, and Fou Phanh, 62, both from Oroville, were arrested after detectives received a search warrant and located 677 marijuana plants and 122 pounds of processed marijuana.

Cal Fire law enforcement are overseeing the ongoing investigation.
