CORNING — Corning is celebrating summer by opening the city pool and a dedication ceremony for the new mural at the facility.

The opening ceremony will be on Monday at 1 p.m. at the pool, 1414 Colusa St.

The Corning Chamber of Commerce has invited the community to enjoy a free swim immediately afterward. The pool will then be open for regular use until 5 p.m., for a $2 child’s fee and $3 per adult.

The City Council approved the mural project in May. Local artist Toni Gaylord oversaw its creation and painting. According to the chamber, Corning Union High School art students came up with what Corning means to them.

Executive Director and Grant Administrator Job Training Center Carrie Ferchaud shared that the city pool was selected for this project because of its offers high visibility and community input.

The project was funded entirely by grant dollars competitively awarded to the Job Training Center from Upstate California Creative Corps—the grant aimed to use art to promote public health and strengthen the artistic workforce in Tehama County.

Mayor Robert Snow promised that once the project was finished, the city would do whatever it needed to preserve the murals and ensure their protection.
