A 22-year-old man from Oroville, on a warrant for theft in Southern California, was arrested about one week after reportedly evading law enforcement when he attempted to enter the Thompson Fire evacuation zone in early July, according to Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey.

Zackary Mason Elliot was reported driving up to a mandatory evacuation area around 2:15 a.m. July 3 and was seen rapidly turning around from a roadblock and accelerating away, according to Ramsey’s press release Tuesday. Ramsey said a Fish and Wildlife lieutenant performed a traffic stop on Elliot near Pine Oaks Road, where he reportedly told the warden he was attempting to visit his grandmother. But he could not provide her name, address or contact.

He also reportedly gave a false name to the warden and reportedly admitted to doing so because he had warrants stemming from theft in Southern California.

Elliot was then placed in handcuffs, but managed to slip the handcuffs during a confrontation when an unrelated driver began arguing with a nearby Butte County Sheriff’s deputy — and wardens moved to assist when the confrontation became physical.

Amid the commotion, Elliot was reportedly able to escape in his car, running through two roadblocks and exceeding 100 mph. Officials then decided to cease the pursuit for public safety, Ramsey said.

About week after Elliot reportedly evaded arrest, he was taken into custody by Fish and Wildlife wardens and the Butte County Sheriff’s Office, according to the release. Ramsey said Elliot was charged Tuesday at Butte County Superior Court with escaping from custody, evading a police officer while driving recklessly, providing a false name, resisting an officer, theft, vandalism and drug charges.

Drug arrest

The Butte Interagency Narcotics Task Force seized more than 343 grams of methamphetamine and 16 grams of heroin while executing a search warrant Tuesday at 1356 Oak Street in Oroville, according to a press release from the agency.
