Prince Harry is fearful Meghan Markle could be attacked if they travel back to the U.K., and says it’s the reason why they won’t return to his birth country.

In ITV’s new documentary “Tabloids on Trial,” the 39-year-old Duke of Sussex opened up about potential dangers he feels the family faces.

“It’s still dangerous, and all it takes is one lone actor, one person who reads this stuff to act on what they have read,” he said, in a quote obtained by People Magazine. “And whether it’s a knife or acid, whatever it is, and these are things that are of genuine concern for me. It’s one of the reasons why I won’t bring my wife back to this country.”

Harry’s apprehension isn’t unfounded. Neil Basu, the former head of counterterrorism for the Metropolitan Police, confirmed there were genuine threats to Meghan’s life while she lived in the U.K. in 2022, and that people have been prosecuted as a result.

Since stepping back from their royal roles and relocating to California in 2020, Markle has made only a few trips back to the U.K., including a visit for Queen Elizabeth’s funeral in 2022.

Harry has returned more frequently, including for his father’s coronation in May 2023. However, the couple’s children, Prince Archie, 5, and Princess Lilibet, 3, have rarely visited. Their last trip was in June 2022 for Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee.

Previously on the ITV documentary, the prince blamed the U.K. tabloids for playing a “central” role in creating the riff in his family, saying, “Anything I say about my family results in a torrent of abuse from the press.”
