Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson have sadly just learned that being globally famous or having all the money in the world can’t keep their home safe from intruders, as they have become the latest celebrities to be targeted by burglars trying to steal from upscale homes in the Los Angeles area.

Law enforcement officials have revealed to TMZ and to the Los Angeles Times that thieves broke into Hanks and Wilson’s cliffside estate in the tony Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles. The burglary occurred last month and in broad daylight, TMZ reported.

The thieves gained access to the $26 million residence by breaking the window a window of a guest house, TMZ said. The breaking of the glass triggered an alarm, but that still didn’t stop the criminals from entering the residence.

It’s not clear whether anything was taken, the Los Angeles Times said. Officials said it doesn’t appear that the burglars were necessarily targeting the Concord-born, Oakland-reared “Forrest Gump” actor and his wife and may have chosen the property at random.

Ever since the “Bling Ring,” celebrities have lived with the nagging possibility that even high-priced security can’t necessarily keep their homes safe from criminals. The “Bling Ring” involved a California-based crime gang, consisting of seven teenagers and adults, who broke into and stole from high-profile celebrity homes in 2008 and 2009. Their victims included Paris Hilton and Orlando Bloom.

Over the years, there have been period spates of burglaries at A-list homes, often involving different gangs of thieves who make off with jewelry and other valuables, as well as large amounts of cash that some stars like to keep onsite. Here are some of the burglaries that have occurred in the past six months.

Sometime in early July, thieves broke into the Los Angeles-area estate of Tina Knowles, the fashion designer mother of Beyonce and Solange, and made off with a safe that contained more than $1 million in cash, jewelry and other valuables, TMZ reported.

In late June, burglars broke into the Encino home of actor and comedian Marlon Wayans in the middle of the night, The Blast reported. Marlon Wayans wasn’t home, but his older brother, Keenen Ivory Wayans, was, and reportedly remained asleep as the thieves ransacked the house and made off with a safe that contained several thousand dollars in cash.

Media personality JoJo Siwa said she was the victim of a “terrifying” early morning break-in at her Los Angeles home in May, as she revealed on social media. TMZ also reported that police believe two burglars entered her home via an open door, while Siwa shared security footage that showed that the thieves wore masks and appeared to be armed. It wasn’t immediately clear what, if anything, was stolen.

In late January, a man was arrested for stealing property from Drake’s Los Angeles home, several hours after his security alerted police to the theft, TMZ reported. Police found the man, still in possession of the rapper’s property, while searching the neighborhood.
