OLLI fall preview offers a look at upcoming classes

CHICO — The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute is hosting a fall preview next week so that people can get information about the upcoming fall term classes.

The fall preview event will be held from 10:30 a.m. to noon Thursday, Aug. 15 at the Chico Masonic Family Center located at 1110 W. East Ave. in Chico.

Snacks and coffee will be served and those attending will be able to learn about and register for the plethora of fall classes offered. The fall term begins Sept. 9.

Instructors and students alike are excited about the fall term. Student Margaret Rader has been taking OLLI classes for 18 years.

“I am so proud of our program through Chico State, which offers a large number of classes in a variety of subjects, delivered either in the classroom, online through Zoom, or outdoors,” Rader said in an email. “This next semester I am looking forward to the Chico State Faculty Lecture Series; Garden Gourmands; and Arts and Eats to name a few.”

Rader loves learning and taking a variety of classes.

“Each of these classes are unique, fun and interesting. The lecture series gives us the opportunity to hear about programs and research from different departments presented by the instructors. ‘Garden Gourmands’ tours various garden landscapes in our area, and an opportunity to socialize after with lunch at a local eatery. ‘Arts and Eats’ tours local art galleries and museums with an opportunity to hear from the artists or curators, followed by coffee and sweets at a variety of sites to discuss our experience,” Rader said.

Rader said she enjoys volunteering and being involved with OLLI. She loves serving on committees, being a classroom host and assisting the office staff.

Instructor Karen Burdette is teaching a class called “The Power of Word: Euphemism, Metaphor and Mindset.”

The class explores the hidden assumptions in language. Burdette and her students will discuss if the way humans speak influence and manipulates their thinking.
