Filing deadline passes for local candidates in Butte County

BUTTE COUNTY — The filing deadline for local candidates passed at 5 p.m. Friday, setting up contests for city councils and school boards in November.

Both the Chico and Oroville councils have contested races in each district up for election, as does the Chico Unified School District board in each trustee area. The Butte County Office of Education has trustee areas for the first time, and two of the three on the ballot have unopposed candidates while the other pits two current, at-large board members.

Except for candidates filing their qualification paperwork, the four Chico City Council races had no changes at the deadline.

District 1 features businessman Michael Johnson and former councilor and police chief Mike O’Brien. Because incumbent Sean Morgan didn’t seek another term, the deadline for this district extends to Wednesday (Aug. 14).

In District 3, incumbent Dale Bennett has a rematch with city commissioner Monica McDaniel. In District 5, which technically has no incumbent because redistricting placed Andrew Coolidge within District 1’s boundaries, Chico State students Katie Hawley and Melissa Lopez-Mora vie for the open seat. In District 7, incumbent Deepika Tandon faces city commissioner Bryce Goldstein.

The Oroville City Council has three seats up for election and features some familiar names returning to the ballot.

District C, where at-large councilor Krysi Riggs opted not to seek a new term, has former mayor Chuck Reynolds and former councilor Linda Draper along with former candidate Ricky Gabriel. At-large councilors Scott Thomson and Janet Goodson are seeking reelection — Thomson in District D against Bryan Williams and Goodson in District E against Levi Kniff.
