CHICO — It was the first day back at school Monday and the Chico Junior High School Cougars were ready to pounce on the new school year.

Erika Galarza has an 11-year-old son, James J. Riley, who is starting his sixth grade year at Chico Junior High. Galarza and her family immigrated from Mexico last year and Riley doesn’t know much English yet.

“He’s taking English as a second language classes,” said Galarza. “He hasn’t called me today, so I think it went pretty well. He likes this school.”

Galarza wasn’t the only parent picking up children after school Monday. The Chico Unified School District returned to class this week. Oroville schools started Aug. 14.

Parent Eduardo Torres has two kids, Victoria and Diego Cruz, who are also starting the sixth grade at Chico Junior High.

“My kids transferred from another school, and they like it,” Torres said. “All of their friends are here.”

Teagan and Maddie Husek, who are identical twins starting their school year, are looking forward to hanging out with their friends.

“We like sleepovers!” both girls said.

Teagan Husek’s favorite subject in school is English. Maddie Husek’s favorite subject is linguistics and she likes her teacher, secondary teacher David Hanley. Both girls said they like to write.

Patience Knauff is 13 and starting her eighth grade year at Chico Junior High. She walked and talked with some friends after school Monday.

“It was a good day and more laid back,” Knauff said.

Kanuff said her favorite school subject is P.E. She said her goal this year is to give the eighth grade address at her junior high graduation.
