Construction updates

The new Chico Unified School District school year began Monday and the city of Chico is identifying road construction projects which will impact access to many schools, according to a press release from the city.

“The city has been undertaking a record-breaking year of infrastructure improvements aimed at enhancing roadway conditions, school safety, and overall traffic efficiency,” said Chico Director of Public Works-Engineering Brendan Ottoboni. “We want the community to know about key projects that may affect Chico Junior High School, Chico High School and Hank Marsh Junior High School students’ routes to school.”

Parents, students, and staff should expect delays and coordinate their schedules based on this road construction: The Esplanade Safety and Accessibility Project which will affect Chico Junior High School and Chico High School, a new roundabout at Memorial Way and Oleander Avenue, a new completed bike path from Memorial Way to East Second Avenue and concrete curb ramps installed to ensure safe pedestrian access. Construction will continue north along The Esplanade and the project should be completed by the spring.

Also, there is the Bruce Road Widening Project. Bruce Road is currently closed from Highway 32 to the bridge over Little Chico Creek, which affects entry to Hank Marsh Jr. High School. Access on Humboldt Road will, for the time being, cross Bruce Road until the construction is complete, according to the release.

For the first few weeks of school, a different route will be provided via eastbound Humboldt Road to Yosemite Drive, using the traffic signal at Highway 32 and Yosemite Drive to enter Marsh Junior High.  Bicycle riders and pedestrians traveling along Humboldt Road will also be allowed to use the temporary crossing at Bruce Road, according to the release.
