SAN MATEO — A man arrested Sunday when he allegedly threatened his brother with a weapon escaped police custody after being taken to a hospital — leading officers on a pursuit and prompting a 10-minute standoff while he attempted to hide on a rooftop, authorities said.

The 23-year-old man was ultimately taken back into custody and booked into San Mateo County Jail on suspicion of assault with a firearm, criminal threats, obstructing arrest, vandalism, possessing a controlled substance and several others, according to a news release from the San Mateo Police Department.

At 12:35 p.m. Sunday, police reported to a house on the 600 block of Magnolia Dr. in response to a physical fight between two brothers — one brandishing a gun, and the other brandishing a knife, according to the release.

When police arrived, the brother with the gun was outside the house and had stashed the gun in his car, police said. He was detained, and the gun was later located in his vehicle. The brother who had been armed with the knife claimed he had armed himself with the weapon in self-defense, officials said.

Police determined that the man with the gun instigated the fight, attacking his brother then arming himself first with a knife and then with a gun. No one was ultimately hurt in the incident, police added.

The brother with the gun was arrested on suspicion of charges, including assault with a deadly weapon and brandishing a firearm, police said. After he was transported to the jail, investigators located narcotics in his possession.

The man “feigned illness,” police said, prompting them to call paramedics and send him to San Mateo Medical Center. However, as he was transferred from a gurney to a hospital bed — a brief moment when he was unrestrained — he “sprang up” and fled the hospital, with officers in pursuit.

The man climbed up onto the roof of a nearby home, police said. Officers convinced him to surrender peacefully after about ten minutes. The man was taken back into custody and transported to the jail.
