CHICO — The homeless camp at the corner of Eaton and Cohasset roads has been reduced dramatically since the major overhaul last month.

Gravel lots with wood borders, each one sized 20-by-20 feet, were organized in the back of the camp with eight empty ones fenced off. Residents of the camp who were given the OK to be there were tasked with fitting all of their belongings within their lots. How many people per lot varied. One toward the front of the camp had four men living in one tent.

Amanda Skelton, a resident of the camp, said the changes have caused some issues for many at the camp.

“It’s been stressful for everybody out here because everyone is just cramped up,” Skelton said. “I know some people are claustrophobic; I know I am.”

The city of Chico deemed the zone a public works project and did a mass cleaning in August after more people moved into the camp without being surveyed first. Additionally, there were complaints from the public about the density of the camp.
