CHICO — A fancy highway entrance into Chico is slated this year by facelift of the Skyway and East 20th Street interchanges with Highway 99, funded by a $3.5 million grant from the Clean California initiative.

Construction to install safety barriers began this week that will allow Caltrans to install decorative concrete walls, metal sculptures and LED lighting to pair, according to Caltrans Public Information Specialist Sergio Ochoa Sánchez.

Other improvements include a decorative slope paving underneath each interchange and transportation art following a “Pacific Flyway” concept, designed in-house by Caltrans, according to Sanchez.

Sample renderings provided by Sanchez show one large scale metal art with birds flying over clouds; another with fish swimming in a river — however he said these are not yet confirmed to be final.

Construction is slated to end the first week of December 2024 depending on delays to weather and other factors, Sanchez said.
