Behind the scenes with Archbishop Mitty’s girls basketball team

WAY-TOO-EARLY TOP FIVE FOR 2024-25

No. 1 ARCHBISHOP MITTY

Early word: McDonald’s All-American Morgan Cheli is off to UConn, but rising junior McKenna Woliczko and Hall of Fame coach Sue Phillips remain. Mitty might take a slight step back with the graduation of three starters, but the Monarchs should still be the class of the Bay Area.

No. 2 BISHOP O’DOWD

Early word: Devin Cosgriff, Jayla Stokes and Madison Gordon are all expected to return. The talented core now has championship experience and could be the team to beat in the East Bay. Malik McCord’s team should compete for a NorCal Open spot.

No. 3 CARONDELET

Early word: Sophomores Layla Dixon and Sophia Ross showed that they should be capable of leading Carondelet during a deep NorCal playoff run. As long as Kelly Sopak is coaching there, the Cougars will be a contender in the East Bay Athletic League.

No. 4 PINEWOOD

Early word: A first-round flameout as the No. 1 seed in NorCal Division I was disappointing, but the future is bright for the Los Atlos hills program. Three-point sharpshooters Katherine Garr, Vallory Kuelker and Jolyn Ding are expected to return as seniors.

No. 5 OAKLAND TECH

Early word: This season’s 14-17 record and controversial loss in the NorCal Division II semifinals will be a blip for a program that had won three consecutive state titles before this season. Uber-talented forwards Jhai Johnson and Terri’A Russell are expected to be back for their junior years.

Editor’s note: Teams eligible for the Bay Area News Group rankings come from leagues based predominantly in Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo and Santa Clara counties. The rankings were compiled by BANG’s Darren Sabedra and Joseph Dycus.
