San Jose Fire Department initially received a call of a residential structure fire at 11:43 a.m. The fire was upgraded to a second alarm about ten minutes later.

Just before 1 p.m., a fire department spokesperson stated that the fire was not yet fully under control.

A segment of 4th Street between St. James Street and St. John Street and a portion of St. John Street between 3rd Street and 5th Street were closed due to the fire.

The fire began in one home, and spread to another abandoned house next door, destroying both, according to a fire department spokesperson. The third house is occupied and was damaged but not destroyed.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

San Jose firefighters also called the San Jose Police Department for traffic control and Pacific Gas and Electric Company to control the utilities in the area.
