The Chico Enterprise-Record is a finalist for seven awards in the annual California News Publishers Association’s Better Newspaper Contest, it was announced Thursday.

The E-R was recognized in five categories in the statewide competition: Best Column Writing, Best Editorial Writing, Housing and Land Use Reporting, Enterprise Reporting and Arts and Entertainment Reporting.

In Best Column Writing, two of the five finalists are from the Enterprise-Record. Kyra Gottesman, who writes the weekly “Off The Record” column, is a finalist along with editor Mike Wolcott, whose “Editor’s Notes” column runs each Sunday.

The E-R also has two finalists in the Arts and Entertainment category. Evan Tuchinsky is a finalist for his “Peak Music” story. Wolcott is also a finalist for his column on the late Jimmy Buffett.

Tuchinsky is a finalist in four categories. The 2023 E-R editorial board — which consisted of Tuchinsky, Wolcott and community members Mike Dunbaugh, Jeff Lobosky and Cris Boyle — is one of four finalists in the Best Editorial Writing division.

Tuchinsky is also a finalist in the Housing and Land Use Reporting category.

Finally, the E-R’s team of Jake Hutchison, Jennie Blevins, Ed Booth, Tuchinsky and Wolcott is a finalist in Best Enterprise Reporting for their “Kiosk Kapers” project, in which E-R reporters spent a morning trying to park (and pay) at the then-new downtown parking kiosks that were causing much consternation among many Chicoans.

“I’m very proud of our entire staff for all of our work,” Wolcott said. “I’m especially happy that our team effort on the kiosk project is being recognized. We work as a team every day, and it’s an honor to be a part of it.”

The CNPA announced the top five finishers in each category Thursday. The winners will be announced at an awards banquet in Los Angeles on July 13.
