The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office received word at 7:20 a.m. that a vehicle had driven through the gates, which are located along a secured county parks pathway, and was heading toward the dam, Sgt. Gordon Currie said in a news release.

Deputies arrived to find the vehicle damaged and unoccupied, according to Currie.

Currie said deputies searched the area and found a man hiding behind a tree near the shore of Crystal Springs Reservoir.

The man admitted to stealing the vehicle in Pacifica and driving it through the gates, according to Currie. He was arrested and booked into county jail on felony charges of taking a vehicle without consent, vandalism and receiving stolen property.
