Palestinian supporters claim responsibility for small fire set on UC Berkeley campus

BERKELEY — Authorities said they were investigating a small fire outside a UC Berkeley building early Thursday, while a group of Palestinian supporters claimed responsibility for the blaze.

UC Berkeley spokesperson Dan Mogulof confirmed the small fire outside Koshland Hall, located on the northwest part of the campus near Hearst Avenue. He said the blaze was first reported about midnight Thursday and that nobody was injured.

UC Berkeley police were investigating. Authorities did not say how badly the building or area was damaged.

In a social media post, a group identifying itself as Palestine Action US took responsibility for the fire with a post under the headline: “UCLA students were attacked last night so we retaliated with a firebomb on UCB campus.”

In the post, the group said people associated with the university interfered with a student protester who was trying to speak. They said more UC Berkeley buildings should be burned, and they threatened the entire university system with “our wrath of revenge” if it did not divest from Israel.

UC police did not respond immediately to requests for comment.
