Forward progress halted on Oroville-area fires

Forward progress on two wildfires that forced evacuations in the Oroville area Saturday has been halted, a CalFire spokesman said Sunday.

The larger of the two fires, the Junes Fire, grew to 1,076 acres before forward progress was halted, Dan Collins of CalFire said Sunday morning. Collins said that fire was 70% contained. Two structures were destroyed in the Junes Fire.

The Rocky Fire had grown to just over 10 acres and was 50% contained as of Sunday morning.

“Crews will be doing some good work today extinguishing hot spots and continuing to build containment lines,” Collins said.

The fires broke out on the same day the National Weather Service issued a red flag warning for the Sacramento Valley region due to dry, windy conditions in wildfire areas.

On Sunday, the NWS extended the warning through early Tuesday because of gusty northerly winds and low humidity, with the strongest winds expected on Monday.
