Thursday will mark the two-year anniversary of the passing of 23-year-old Alexis Gabe, and in her memory, her father, Gwyn Gabe, is asking everyone to carry out “random acts of kindness.”

The Oakley family has declared Jan. 26 as “Kindness Day” in honor of Alexis, whom Gwyn Gabe said was “a shining example of kindness and compassion” and “always went out of her way to make others feel loved and included.”

Gabe disappeared on the evening of Jan. 26, 2022, after she left her Oakley home to visit her ex-boyfriend in Antioch. Police later determined he killed her, but before they could arrest him at the Seattle-area apartment where he had relocated, he charged at the arresting officers and was fatally shot.

The case drew national attention and a Facebook page to help find her drew nearly 17,000 followers. After many months of searching for her, her remains were found in the Sierra Foothills.

“Over the past couple of years, we have experienced numerous challenges, and this has been one of the toughest,” said Gwyn Gabe in a statement. “However, we don’t want to commemorate this somber occasion every year in the same way.”

Gabe said small gestures can have a big impact and challenged people to register to commit to doing just that in Alexis’ name. He said he’s hoping to get at least 500 members from his Justice for Alex Facebook page to do just that.

The acts of kindness can be as small as writing a thank-you note, reading a book to a child, or buying a cup of coffee for someone, but Gabe wants participants to share their stories on the Justice for Alexis Gabe page.

In his post, Gabe said his family intends to visit and bring flowers to the park bench the City of Oakley had made in her honor near Oakley City Hall. He invites everyone to join them on Thursday evening at the informal gathering.

“Let’s spread the kindness and keep Alexis’ spirit alive,” Gabe wrote on Facebook.
