CHICO — As the Park Fire overtook ridge communities north of Chico on Wednesday night, dozens of residents had a harrowing escape.

The Butte County Sheriff’s Office confirmed 80-100 people needed first responders to guide them to safety.

“We were able to get those people on Cohasset Road and lead them out by traversing logging roads and getting them to a state highway,” said Megan McMann, community relations coordinator for BCSO.

Starting around 9 p.m. at upper Cohasset Road, evacuees traveled up into Tehama County and took the H-Line logging road to Highway 36. Sierra Pacific Industries, which has timber holdings in the region, played a role in the rescue.

“Collaborating with Cal Fire, Sierra Pacific Industries employees and contractors assisted Cohasset-area residence in evacuating from the Park Fire, ensuring their safe passage out of the wildfire zone,” said Mark Luster, community relation manager with Sierra Pacific. “With wildfires posing significant threats to our communities, and forest, we are grateful to have been able to offer our support.”
