Two people found dead at Union City home where deputy was shot, wounded Wednesday

UNION CITY — Two people suspected of shooting and critically wounding an Alameda County Sheriff’s Office deputy who was serving an eviction notice on Wednesday have been found dead, authorities said Thursday.

Union City police SWAT team members found the two people while serving search warrants at the location where the shooting happened. In a statement shortly before noon, Union City police said they attempted to contact the two for several hours before entering the home.

Both had self-inflicted gunshot wounds, police said.

The deputy is expected to recover after undergoing surgery for a gunshot wound to his arm Wednesday night, according to the sheriff’s office. On Wednesday, authorities described the injuries as critical but not life-threatening.

“We are happy to report he is in recovery (and) in good spirits,” the agency said in a social media post.

The original incident happened about 1:35 p.m. Wednesday in the 33000 block of Dowe Avenue, off of Alvarado-Niles Boulevard. One or both of the suspects opened fire as deputies were serving an eviction in what is a mostly industrial area.

Authorities did not immediately identify either person.

A similar incident happened Tuesday afternoon in Oakland. Sheriff’s deputies were serving an eviction at a home in the 8200 block of Outlook Avenue, near 82nd Avenue, when they heard a loud noise they believed might have been a gunshot. No officers or deputies were injured, according to an Oakland police statement Thursday morning.

Oakland police were called to the scene to investigate. A SWAT team eventually determined no one was inside the residence.
