A man seen in the women’s restroom at a Redlands park was shot and pistol-whipped by another man who confronted him, Redlands police said on Monday, Jan. 29.

Rudy Daniel Vasquez, 33, of Redlands was booked on suspicion of attempted murder at the Central Detention Center in San Bernardino, where he was being held in lieu of $2 million bail.

The victim was expected to survive, said Carl Baker, a Police Department spokesman.

The attack happened Saturday around 3:40 p.m. in Sylvan Park, at 601 N. University Ave.

The victim told police that he had planned to use the men’s restroom, but when he discovered it was being used, he entered the women’s restroom, Baker said.

Two girls went inside and saw the man. One told Vasquez, who went over to the bathroom, argued with the victim, shot him in a knee and struck him in the head with the gun, Baker said.

One responding officer applied a tourniquet, Baker said.

Other officers went looking for Vasquez, who fled in a silver SUV, Baker said. They pulled him over about a mile away on Alta Street, where he threw the gun from the car and got out, Baker said. Vasquez was then arrested.

Redlands police also plan to seek a charge of being an accessory to a crime against a woman who was with Vasquez, Baker said. She was involved in the altercation with the victim, and she was in the car with the suspect when he fled, the spokesman said.
