Three vehicles were involved in a crash Monday morning on northbound Highway 99 north of Neal Road.

Cal Fire Butte County Fire Captain Jake Gilliam said one lane was partially blocked because of construction on Highway 99 and this may have contributed to the accident, which was reported just after 9:30 a.m.

Gilliam said there was one ambulance at the scene, but did not see anyone with injuries. He said there was moderate damage to two of the vehicles and one with major damage to the front.

The California Highway Patrol also responded. The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

Scrap metal fire

A fire at Chico Scrap Metal in Durham sent a huge plume of black smoke into the air but was quickly contained Saturday.

Cal Fire-Butte County responded to the fire around 1 p.m. Saturday and found a 200-by-100-foot pile of scrap metal in flames. Two truck companies were positioned around the fire to contain it. Crews were able to protect nearby structures and prevented the fire from spreading further.

No structures were damaged and there were no injuries.  Firefighters stayed for several hours to overhaul and extinguish the remaining hot spots in the scrap pile.
