The city of Chico cleared out City Plaza and fenced off the area this weekend.

A notice on the fence states, “As of September 27, 2024 and onward until work is complete, no person or their property will be permitted to enter or reenter the area of City Plaza so that critical repairs and maintenance can be completed.”

City Manager Mark Sorenson said the city was addressing “public health issues and maintenance needs.” He listed the needs as spraying trees with insecticide, conducting pest control for cockroaches, cleaning and decontamination.

Chico State has rented the plaza for next Friday and Saturday during its annual Wildcat Weekend. Sorenson said the goal of the plaza’s closure is to get it ready in time for these events.

City Councilor Addison Winslow said though the closure would be temporary, he was disappointed to see the sidewalk closed, noting that the area is now inaccessible for those who park at the plaza.

“I feel like it’s not necessary and we should generally protect safe walkways,” Winslow said.

Power restored

Chico State has restored power to campus and will resume classes Monday.

The power initially went out on Thursday, prompting the university to cancel Friday classes and close campus for the weekend.

Chico State public relations manager Andrew Staples said the university will be checking campus facilities throughout the weekend to asses the affects of the outage.

Potential shutoff

PG&E advised Butte County residents of a potential Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) beginning Monday due to heightened wildfire risks associated with forecasted offshore winds and low humidity.

PG&E notified approximately 1,585 customers in the area, urging them to prepare for possible outages.

Concow Elementary School and the Paradise Parks and Recreation Center will serve as Community Resource Centers, providing support for those affected by the shutoff. The shutoff is anticipated to start Monday morning and may last through Tuesday.
