Police ID pair found dead after shooting, wounding Alameda County sheriff’s deputy

UNION CITY – The two people suspected of shooting and wounding an Alameda County sheriff’s deputy here last month have been identified as Union City residents Matthew Dorthick and Lizzette Chann, according to authorities.

Dorthick, 56, and Chann, 54 were found dead hours after the shooting. They appeared to have died as a result of a murder-suicide, the Union City Police Department said in a news release Tuesday.

The deputy was shot while serving an eviction notice at a business at 33370 Dowe Ave. on Jan. 24. He underwent surgery for a gunshot wound to his arm the same day, according to police. An update on his condition was not immediately available.

Following the shooting, police obtained search warrants for the business, and after spending hours trying to contact Dorthick and Chann, a SWAT team entered the business and found both dead from apparent gunshot wounds.

“UCPD detectives believe these two individuals were responsible for the shooting of the ACSO deputy, and no other suspects or victims were located inside,” police said in the news release.

Part of the business, which is located in an industrial area, had been converted into a living space, according to police.

In an interview following the shooting, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office said the eviction process for the tenants began in November. A legal notice was posted on Jan. 14.
