Human remains found on California mountain identified as missing actor Julian Sands

All four were reported overdue from hikes Sunday, Feb. 4, as a storm moved in to Southern California.

The three hikers on the Bear Canyon Trail were carrying a tent and sleeping bags, and they found a place to shelter overnight from the 50-mph winds. A search team found them around 1 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 5, at 8,400 feet elevation, and hiked with them back to a command post.

The hikers and searches were cleared by a medical team, and all were off the mountain by 5 p.m., the Sierra Madre Search and Rescue Team said.

The search for the solo hiker continued.

Lisei Huang, 22, of El Monte, had set out around 2 p.m. Sunday and was last heard from around 4 that afternoon. The San Bernardino County sheriff’s department received a report that she was overdue at 11 p.m., and the department’s search crew started looking for her around 2:30 a.m. Monday.

On Tuesday, crews were called off the mountain because of avalanche risks during heavy snowfall. The search will resume “when it is safe,” said a press release Wednesday from the sheriff’s department.

Mount Baldy, whose summit is at 10,000 feet, has received more than 24 inches of snow since Sunday.

Last month, a man from the community of Mount Baldy was found dead after falling from a trail. In January 2023, actor Julian Sands disappeared on the mountain; remains found in June were identified as his.
