New Ballet gets a leg up
New Ballet’s free educational programming got a leg up recently in the form of a $10,000 Challenge America award from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA).
“This programming connects students in public Title 1 schools with dance education opportunities at the elementary education level through New Ballet Kids,” said Dalia Rawson, founder and director of New Ballet, in a statement. “With the NEA grant, New Ballet can offer free, in-depth dance classes to elementary-age students through First Step, and offers long-term, committed dance instruction through our continuing scholarship program.”

New Ballet School’s First Step Program works with first- through third-graders at Title 1 schools in the San Jose Unified School District. During the pandemic, New Ballet worked with teachers at elementary schools such as Horace Mann, Cowell and Grant by to select students they felt would benefit from the program. Forty kids were selected for this full tuition scholarship program, which includes classes, uniforms and shoes.
